Zachary A. Design is a Chicago-based furniture design studio creating unexpectedly lightweight outdoor furniture.
Our pieces look like cast concrete, yet weigh only a fraction as much. Crafted from a blend of stone aggregate, resin, and fiberglass, each piece is designed to be both moved and lived with. Even our largest tables can be lifted and positioned by just one or two people.
Designed for year-round outdoor living, our furniture can remain completely uncovered through the seasons. Our pieces are durable yet expressive, becoming a lasting part of the surroundings.
Each piece is individually cast by hand in Chicago by a skilled team of artisans specializing in resin and fiberglass construction. From mold-making to finishing, every piece is made, inspected, and approved by our team; ensuring that what leaves the studio meets our standards for craftsmanship, quality, and character.

While it disrupts our routine perception, the Unexpected need not be jarring or dissonant.
It is the feeling you have when you bump into a next-door neighbor on a trip abroad. A flower peeking through the snow. The Unexpected is the spirit of “why not?”
We even have unexpected origins. 15 years ago, I began to collaborate with a Chicago-based, family-owned statuary with roots stretching back to Napoleonic Italy. Their romantic, sometimes eerie, craft process of making statues from fiberglass molds inspired a "why not" moment, and we applied these old world techniques to design with a novel but timeless material: Stone that is lightweight and adaptable to meet the versatility required by contemporary life.
Each day our team thrives amid the vivid sights and sounds of the statuary where we continue to explore the overlap between sculptural spirit and practical design.
